THE EXPERIENCE

Let's be honest, labour and birth is not pretty, it's not fun and it's very messy, so why would you possibly want to share that intimate, and somewhat embarrassing moment with a stranger, and more importantly, photograph it! Well, because it's absolutely worth it, they'll be the most important photographs of your life! And we won't be strangers for long, and certainly won't be after. Bringing a life into the world is a miracle, and it should be captured. Although you're the highlight of the show, you will actually miss most of it. All of my clients say how much of a blur the whole experience was, and I'm sure you will feel the same. If you've already had a child before then you'll know what I'm talking about too.

So by having these photos, it will serve as a reminder, a memory, a keepsake, you will always have these to look back on and experience it all over again (minus the pain) and that's truly irreplaceable. When photographing a birth, my aim is to be as discreet as possible, I won't interfere with anything that's going on. I will stand out of the way and capture the moment from a distance rather than try and be another birthing partner, as that's the last thing you'll need I'm sure. However, if at any point you need me to help you in any way, I will be there as an extra pair of hands as well as documenting the amazing event.

But once you book, we will chat about boundaries in more detail. As you can see in my images, they can be quite graphic. Some couples don't mind me capturing every detail, whereas some prefer me to stay at the head and not get intimate images, this is totally your choice and again it's to be discussed upon booking. Where graphic areas are photographed, your dignity is my top priority (although I'm sure that'll go out of the window when you're in labour anyway). All images are displayed in a classy way, either covered, darkened or blurred. Your final images will never show you in a way you wouldn't be comfortable.I don't just photograph the baby entering the world, I document the build up to that. The relationship between you and your birthing partner, the love, the pain, the emotion, the relief, and finally the ecstasy of seeing and holding your beautiful baby for the first time. I capture every detail from start to finish, the small things that you may not remember, but are all part of the adventure. I will be with you from around 5-6cm dilated, up until around an hour after baby has entered the world.I will be on call for 4 weeks, 2 weeks either side of your due date, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I will be 100% dedicated to receiving the call. I will not book any other session into my diary during this time so I am ready to run out of the house and get to you as soon as possible. For this reason of not being able to carry out any of my other services (maternity, newborn, baby and cake smash photography), my birth photography diary is very limited. I can only schedule in 3 per year maximum, so booking me early is essential. After your 12 week scan would be ideal. My usual diary books up months in advance to last minute requests are not always possible, but get in touch and I'll see if we can work something out.I do ask for a non refundable retainer of only £250,  the remaining balance must be paid 4 weeks prior to your due date. But I offer monthly instalments to help make things more affordable. If you cancel your birth photography within 8 weeks of due date, your additional payments to the deposit will be returned to you. Please be aware that the deposit is a non-refundable retainer and the deposit payment is legally a non-refundable retainer payment as renumeration for other work that is lost as a result of the retained date. In the very unlikely event I have to cancel, I will pay you back the deposit in full. I have up to the due date to refund you.

As a date for a cesarean is set in advance, this guarantees I'll be there to photograph your birth. But due to c-sections sometimes needing to be rescheduled last minute by the hospital, the price also allows for me to clear the whole week ahead of your planned date and reschedule as much as needed.

I will not be on call 24/7 for this service. I'll book my monthly diary as normal in the studio and whilst I'll always do my upmost best to make sure I'm there, it's not guaranteed, hence the lower price. Where I'm not able to be there due to work commitments, your funds will be transferred over to a newborn photoshoot.

FAQ

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions I get regarding your newborn session, if your question isn't listed below, or if you'd like to discuss something in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me.

When do I need to book my session?

Please please please do not leave it until late pregnancy, spaces are very limited and I would hate to have to turn you away. Your birth package can be booked anytime after your 12 week scan, earlier the better to avoid disappointment. If you are not booking with at least 5 months notice, please contact me first to ensure I can accept your booking.

How do I book?

A £250 non refundable retainer needs to be paid to secure your booking. I will provisionally hold your dates for 24 hours without payment but after this I have the right to give it to somebody else as sessions are very limited. Once the retainer is paid, I will clear my diary for 2 weeks either side of your diary.

Will my images be private?

I understand this is not like a 'normal' session where I share images on social media, and there certainly won't be any live videos! This is an intimate moment for yourself and the close people you choose to see. I only ever share birth images online with permission from the parents, and your photographs will remain confidential unless agreed otherwise.

Do you only photograph vaginal births?

I am more than happy to photograph both vaginal births and c-section births, both are just as beautiful. However there are strict rules when it comes to cesareans which are out of my control. If you have a planned c-section, you will need to ask permission from the hospital if they will allow a photographer in theatre before booking me. If you are hoping for a vaginal birth, you will need to again check with the hospital/ midwife about what would happen if you had to have an emergency c-section. It's always at the discretion of the hospital/ midwife/ surgeon.

Do you photograph home births?

Absolutely! Wherever you decide to have your baby, I'll be up for it.

How long will you be there for?

This all depends on how long you are in labour, I never expect to just pop in, I'm there for the long run. The price is the same no matter if it's 1 hour or 20 hours. I will stay with you for a short while after baby has been born, and then leave you to enjoy being new parents alone.

What areas do you cover?

My usual go-to hospitals are St. Mary's Birth Centre Melton Mowbray, Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General and Nottingham Queens Medical Centre. For home births, I cover anywhere in the local area, Leicestershire, Charnwood, Rutland, Nottinghamshire usually. I can travel further afield, but the further away you are, the longer it will take me to get to you. The postcode in which I'd be travelling from is LE12 7NA if you'd like to check distance.

What if you miss the birth?

As long as you keep me well updated, it shouldn't happen. I ask for text updates from your birthing partner from the initial pains, through to the midwife updates, and we'll play it by ear as to when I head to you. In the unlikely event I do miss the birth, due to not arriving on time, or medical reasons outside of my control (such as an emergency c-section) then I will take a 'fresh 48' photoshoot, of you and/ or your new arrival in the hospital, in a natural setting. Either shortly after birth (if you're feeling up to it) or I can come back the following day.

T&C's

Full balance must be paid before the birth is photographed.

Price covers travelling and parking expenses to local hospitals and homes.

No refunds will be given if the birth is missed due to loss of work whilst being on call,

but alternative shoots will be granted in exchange of the money paid.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
